Baía das Gatas: getting to the festival by ferry

The festival, every August

Born in 1984 on a full-moon beach weekend, Baía das Gatas is the biggest music festival in Cabo Verde and one of the oldest in Africa — the "Woodstock of Africa," held each August on a bay of golden sand on São Vicente's northeast coast, about half an hour from Mindelo. Admission has traditionally been free, and the crowd is the whole country plus a large slice of the diaspora home for the summer. The festival has weathered its share of history: the 2025 edition was cancelled after storm Erin put São Vicente under a state of calamity, and the 42nd edition in August 2026 was the comeback — bigger than usual, exactly as comeback years tend to be. Dates for each edition are announced closer to the time; when they are, the ferry advice below applies.

Where it is and how the ferry fits

The festival site is on São Vicente, so most visitors route through Mindelo — by air into Cesária Évora Airport, or by sea. The crossing that matters most is Santo Antão ↔ São Vicente: it is short, roughly an hour depending on the sea, runs several times a day with two operators (Nôs Ferry and CV Interilhas), and it is how everyone on Santo Antão gets to the party, since Santo Antão has no airport at all. If you are staying on Santo Antão and day-tripping to the festival — plenty of people do — the ferry is your lifeline in both directions.

What festival weekend does to the ferries

Big national events concentrate travel into a few sailings, and the festival days each August are the busiest of the summer on the channel. Honest advice from how these weekends usually go: buy your crossing as early as the operators allow — schedules are typically published only a short way ahead, so check the live times often in the week before. Arrive at the terminal earlier than the usual 30–45 minutes on peak days. Expect the last sailings after festival nights to be in heavy demand, and have a fallback plan (a bed on the São Vicente side beats an argument at the quay). Operators have sometimes added extra sailings around major festivals — if they do, those appear in the live schedule, so check it rather than assuming.

If you are coming from further away

From the southern islands, there is no direct ferry to São Vicente — flying into Mindelo is the practical route for festival weekend. By sea, São Vicente connects onward only via the long Linha Redonda circuit through São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista, which is an island-hopping adventure in its own right, not a quick festival transfer.

While you are there

Mindelo deserves a day of its own before or after the festival — the waterfront, the morna bars, the town that raised Cesária Évora. Read the São Vicente & Mindelo guide.
